As part of a coalition you may attend one of several meetings with other landowners in your area to obtain more information about the direction of their movement and to hear from speakers involved in the growing gas lease phenomenon. These speakers may include representatives from energy companies, attorneys, consulting agents and representatives from the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation and Farm Bureau.
As each coalition is formed, they will be looking for individuals interested in becoming part of a steering committee. The steering committee will represent the interests of the coalition and meet with any parties that the coalition has chosen to help assist in negotiating their lease. This may include attorney(s), consulting agents or the energy companies themselves. The steering committee will meet with or otherwise keep the coalition informed of ongoing progress with the lease.
Once the steering committee has a lease generally completed, they will provide a draft to all members of the coalition for any modifications and to address any questions or concerns before it is to be finalized.
Once finalized there will be one or more opportunities for each landowner to actually sign their lease.
A lease will go through many drafts in the coming months before one is agreed upon and finalized.
